Great ASPectations ... a pleasantly peculiar Active Server Pages Commentary
A Resume Collection App
One of my favorite ongoing columns at the ASP Alliance is The ASP Trenches. A Glenn Cook original, this area is updated regularly, full of useful information, and just plain fun to read. Glenn's main page points to a Resume and Job Collection App that serves as both a tutorial and a growing collection of ASP Developer resumes.

Just for fun, I decided to fill out a mini resume. It's short and simple. After setting up an account name and password, there were only nine questions. These nine are enough, however, to give a good picture of a job candidate's skills.

I wasn't keen on displaying any salary information, so I tried blanking that field out. (Glenn provided me with a nice row of zeroes, as a default, but I didn't have the sense to use them.) This resulted in an ASP error. Paging back to the entry form and replacing the zero took care of this.

The resume search form allows for searching by job type, salary level, and region. I decided to see who was here from The Great Northwest. The resulting list showed seven cohorts, with a rather broad range of salary requirements. Most had included sample web sites and email addresses.

Once you've played with the site, take Glenn's tutorial for a ride. First he explains what the FOOapp is (Forum for Online Opportunities), then he shows you how he coded it.

If he wanted to market this product, Glenn would need to spend a bit of time tightening up the error trapping. He might also want to add some expiration rules, so that really old information didn't clog the system.

As a tutorial, it's great the way it is. He explains his code line by line, giving a link to download the entire app and detailing exactly what needs to be changed to make it work on a different server.

Meanwhile, this collection of resumes is impressive. If you're looking to hire, check it out.
