WARNING! These tutorials are three years old. They will be here as long as there is a demand, but they will have a new home in a folder called "archives". Why have I been so quiet for so long? mE On .NET.
Things have changed
recently - for the better. VB and ASP as you knew them a year
ago will soon be forgotten. Patches, service packs, and add-ons
aren't cutting it. If it was built on top of classes that were once a
patch for a transition to new technology 5 years ago, it's marked for
retirement...
Sure there's a backlash . The competition hates it and so do the people who don't want to have to move to a new cubicle. You're going to hear plenty of elite or lazy programmers crying that MS has destroyed the spirit of VB. Personally, I have nothing against "spirits" who might be happy pushing boulders up a hill for eternity. If I thought there was going to be a significant demand in the market for boulder pushers in 2-3 years, I might not have started archiving what has been one of the aspalliance's most successful columns. ASP.NET is *NOT* server-side script. ASP is better than ever and will blow you away.
Should I learn Java or .NET ?: Come
on, are you serious? Start learning both and let the marketing departments
fight it out. Both
sides are right. Both platforms can do almost as much as the other.
Make a decision that works for you and your business.
Personally, I'll be coding with C# in.NET. Frankly, I'm sick of the whining I hear in the VB and Java communities lately. C'mon, put a new diaper on and try writing something worthwhile. |
