05/04/2004 - FlashBelt Flash Conference - June 24-25, 2004 - Minneapolis, Minn.

Looks like the midwest is getting their own Flash conference and it looks GOOD!! In it's inaugural year, FlashBelt has a line up worthy of any established Flash conference that usually sticks to the east or west coast and costs a small fortune to attend. Speaking this year (Thurs. June 24), will be Laurence Bricker, Mike Downey, theMAKERS, Craig Swann and Jeremy Thorp covering just about all aspects of Flash application design and development. Friday, June 25, there will be additional workshops only available to registered FlashBelt attendees. You can find out more info here. Mention that you heard about FlashBelt from me and maybe they'll hook me up with a t-shirt.

04/07/2004 - Who says you have to use vs.net?

I gotta say.. I really don't like using visual studio.net. I mean i really really don't like using it. Other options for asp.net development include Macromedia Dreamweaver (which i use for asp.net web dev), Homesite (there is a C# addin), and... well there are others but for full on xhtml web standards compliant development.. those are the two I use. If you know of one that you think is just the greatest then let me know with an email. BUT, for console apps or winForms, the two IDEs mentioned about just don't cut it. Just when I was about to give up hope and crack open vs.net, my good buddy turned me on to SharpDevelop. This is a great C# IDE (still beta so can be a little buggy) that is FREE! Oh... and yes it has intellisense. Check it out.

11/14/2003 - Running multiple versions of IE

One of the biggest pains of testing browser compatability is that you cannot have multiple versions of IE running on the same windows install. well now you can. here's an article at www.insert-title.com explaining how to do it.

11/05/2003 - Yes, actually the name does matter

Whidbey is the name for asp.net version 2. Why would anyone choose this name unless your other choices where a) turd, b) butt, c) puke? i normally don't care about stuff like this but as much flack as MS gets.. you would think they could come up with something better. but i guess they couldn't. maybe it's a code name like "whistler" and they are definitely saving the cool name for the release. let's hope. you can learn more about Whidbey at www.asp.net. it's not even in the dictionary.

11/03/2003 - Even if Hallowe'en is over...

07/15/2003 - Studiowhiz.com Redesign

Studiowhiz.com

Studiowhiz.com Has done a complete site redesign that looks great. Site content is very accessible and easy to navigate through. If you are not familiar with Studiowhiz you definitely need to check this site out. Studiowhiz is a great (and very tightly knit) community of web designers and developers covering a broad range of specialties. The software, book reviews and tutorials are being added/updated and definitely worth checking on. The forums are a hangout for Flash programmers and designers, client side scripters and server side programmers, you can always find someone ready to lend a hand.

07/16/2003 - Netscape Sucks...

Netscape is down for the count... Wow!!! Are you suprised?? Netscape has been a second rate browser for about 5 years now. All the greatness of Mozilla was watered down to a skinable browser. Yep... that's what you need to gain users... a skinable browser and a DOM that was a joke. And those of you that kept saying how great NS was when i said it was crappy ... I TOLD YOU SO!!!

07/10/2003 - Tour De France Live Update

Click the link to get my TDF live update feed. You can also drag it to your browser's link toolbar to have it forever.

05/08/2003 - Mozilla 1.4 Beta Released

Mozilla.org just released their 1.4 beta version of the Mozilla browser. "Mozilla on Windows now has support for NTLM authentication. This enables Mozilla to talk to MS web and proxy servers that are configured to use "windows integrated security" - from 1.4b release notes. If you are not familiar with the mozilla browser it is definitely worth checking out. Especially if you want to write your client side code to conform to web standards.

05/07/2003 - More Helpful info on making compliant pages...

Kevin Yank wrote a great article over at SitePoint.com a while back on side stepping the issue of not being able to use the target="" attribute in <a> tags while trying to comply to XHTML 1.0 Strict. This is a nice workaround for anyone trying to code to web standards.

03/14/2003 - Friends of Ed, Wrox and Glasshaus close shop

Sad to say that Peer Information, the parent company of the book publishers listed above, have declared bankruptcy. damn... they will be missed. good luck to my friends at foe and glasshaus.

02/25/2003 - So Much Going On

Colin Moock has released his ActionScript - The Definitive Guide (second edition) as an online resource through O'Reily. info here. Colin reports : "you can search the entire text of the book without a subscription. Safari also lets you bookmark and annotate pages, save them or print them out for offline reading." Sounds pretty cool.

Macromedia has released the DevNet. I could write a synopsis of what it is but you can get the MM lowdown here.

I think that ZD Net is the best place for Microsoft bashing ( and I.T. whining in general ). Ok. Next to www.slashdot.org. Every news item will evenually have some guy equate the topic to Microsoft keeping everyone down. Folks even say "Microsuck" and "Micro$oft". It's kinda like pro wrestling. Check it out.

02/25/2003 - The Most Annoying Script EVER!

This is definitely the most annoying thing i have ever seen. Don't ever use this or i'm going to come and take away your html.
<script type="text/javascript">
    var msg = "This is stupid. ";
    var speed = 200;
    function ScrollTitle() {
        document.title = msg;
        msg = msg.substring(1,msg.length) + msg.charAt(0);
        setTimeout("ScrollTitle()", speed);
    }
    ScrollTitle();
</script>

01/16/2003 - THE SKY IS FALLING!! THE SKY IS FALLING!!

What is supposed to be a HUGE snowstorm, has hit Richmond with a slight dusting. My place of employment is not opening tomorrow. Sometimes I really love living in the south. Hopefully that will give me some time to work on documentation and tutorials for here and www.flash-mx.com.

01/14/2003 - Is your markup valid? Is it really really valid?

I was writing an article about 'conforming to web standards' but with only two exceptions, my list of standards compliant websites failed validation using the w3c validation service. In the process though, I found a handy addon for mozilla that makes standards validation easy. Checky is a project at mozdev.org that allows you to validate your pages against 18 different validation services. More to come on implementing web standards.

01/12/2003 - Flash-MX.com is up

The company I work for has moved there offices out of the 'burbs to downtown Richmond, Va. Now I get to ride my bike to work everyday. It's only about 8 miles round trip, but definitely a great way to begin and end a work day. I'm riding a 2001 Trek 8500 XTR/XT with a SID XC shock (in case you are wondering).

01/06/2003 - Wax Praxis redesign

12/26/2002 - Microsoft Sets Sites On Macromedia

ummm.... no, but read about the rumour: here

12/23/2002 - detecting supressed pop windows

The latest gecko based browsers all have the ability to supress uncalled popup windows. While this is a god send for surfing porn, it's not too hot when you need to pop your site content in a new window yourself. Here's a script that will detect whether or not the user is taking advantage of these latest browser capabilities and a workaround solution.

12/15/2002 - what's going on??

site redesign in progress. i have no skills.
i will be updating my tutorials with asp.net (using C#) and showing how to use .net with flash. The examples that are live now don't have much/any documentation but if you have questions or see something not available for download, just shoot me an email and i can get it out.
