Album Description
Voted "Best Newcomer" by BBC Music Magazine in 2006 and acclaimed as "Artist of the Year" in the prestigious Classic FM Gramophone Awards only a year later, 25-year-old Julia Fischer is already being hailed as one of the truly great violinists of the 21st century.
Julia burst upon the international music scene at the 1995 International Yehudi Menuhin Competition by taking first prize as well as a special prize for "Best Bach Solo Work." It is only natural then that her Decca debut disc should feature Bach -- this time the solo and double concertos. Julia is joined by the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in these strikingly sophisticated and technically brilliant performances.

Like this. Good music. Good interpretations of Bach. Good for listening and worth listening to over again.

These are the excerpts from recent concert reviews on February 12, 2009 "She is a formal, severe artist, evidently uneasy with being marketed as yet another fetching young violinist." "Fischer's sense of purpose, which can be felt in every note she plays, obviously overrules any sense of humor when it comes to the great masters. That may be what has most helped this German violinist stand out from her flashy competition." "Bach that lacked a sense of freedom, spontaneity or, heaven forbid, fun. I've found this lack also in Fischer's tightly wound recordings of standard repertory, which are admirable but bland." This is the result (actually Insults) artists are going to get sometimes, when they tried to make everybody Happy. Obviously, it is not possible. ASMF has been very popular, influential but mediocre at its core, I think. Has she become a poster child of that OC? I do not know how the EU music business is commissioning their artists. Also it may not be a smart move to increase repertoires when you still did not cover enough of a composer; especially a performer has plenty of years ahead. Complacency can come to you unknowingly and unconsciously. One cannot afford ignoring Dutch establishments either these days too. (Don't let that girl pass you by.) Julia still does not have enough energy and tone to cover demanding repertoire.

Julia Fischer strikes me as the new Anne-Sophie Mutter, and my previous favourite version of these 3 gorgeous concerti was the Mutter one with Salvatore Accardo and the ECO, recorded when Frl. Mutter was about three-and-a-half. So, I played them one against the other - and I'm torn. Both ladies play with precision and flair and joy, and are absolutely ear-ravishing, and in the end, to me there is overall nothing to choose between them. Neither uses a baroque violin, but this is music for the ages, not to be straitjacketed with period performance considerations. However, the thing that for me makes the big difference is the recording quality. This version has a nice, crisp recording, whereas the ECO in the Mutter version (now pretty ancient admittedly) sounds congested, as if all the fiddlers were forced to stand and play in the corner for being naughty boys and girls.
Julia Fischer is an immense talent. I have several recordings of this music and this is the best. Her playing is absolutely beautiful !

This is a highly recommended CD. For me it is a fusion of idiomatic Baroque playing and the best of "Romantic" (for want of a better term) Baroque playing. The production is excellent and the beautiful warm solo playing by Julia Fischer, not to mention the outstanding ensemble of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, makes it an outstanding performance. Fischer's violin playing is sublime and brings out the best in these Concerti. I particularly love the slow movements for their measured and never hurried tempi, and the subtle nuances and exquisite tone of Julia Fischer's violin playing. I look forward to hearing a lot more from this superb artist.
