Click here to return to my article index The following describes what I suggest to developers who are interested in learning about ASP.NET and .NET in general. 1)Read Scott Mitchell's "ASP.NET: An Introduction and My Views on the Matter" at http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/webtech/071500-1.3.shtml. The perfect amount of codeand narrative to prepare you with the changes and paradigm shift found in ASP.NET. 2) Download and Install the .NET Beta 2 Framework as suggested by http://www.asp.net. The Framework can be found at http://www.asp.net/b2download.aspx and the Mobile Framework can be found at http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp?URL=/code/sample.asp?url=/msdn-files/027/001/516/msdncompositedoc.xml 3) Hit the QuickStart Tutorials (and learn by example) at:
They are all mirrors of the same content but I think it's nice to know multiple Quickstart locations as Beta 1 of the framework periodically causes some of these sites trouble =). If you have installed the .NET Beta 1 Framework then you can also view the Quickstart examples on your local machine by installing the samples, firing up IIS, and browsing to http://localhost/quickstart/aspplus/. 4) Once you have some of the basics down I highly suggest you check out the IBuySpy Store/Portal site at http://www.ibuyspy.com. This site was developed using many of Microsoft's "best practices". There is on-line documentation (also downloadable) which includes the code for the entire site! 5) At some point you will have learned all there is to know from the Quickstart examples and your task at hand will require more sophisticated techniques. When you journey outside of the Quickstart tutorials for informaion I suggest you first go to http://www.123aspx.com. Dave, the webmaster of 123aspx.com, has put together a great resource for tracking down .NET examples/tutorials of all kinds. 6) Well, by now you have probably begun to code your own pages and more. You just can't seem to find a tutorial/example anywhere that demonstrates how to accomplish your task at hand. What should you do? Well, you can ask some of the brightest minds in the ASP.NET community to give you a hand. You can.... fire questions at the extremely knowledgeable people who hang out here on the lists at the ASPAlliance Lists! You could also post messages on the moderated ASP+ board over at http://www.aspmessageboard.com, the Wrox discussion lists at http://p2p.wrox.com/list.asp?list=aspx and the DOTNET discussion lists at http://discuss.develop.com/dotnet.html. 7) Last but not least you can find loads of ASP.NET information "Alex's Top 10 .NET sites" below: All of the above material can be found on the Internet for free! If you would like printed material then I suggest you check out http://www.dotnetbooks.com for a list of current and upcoming .NET titles. | |||||||||||||||
